Mahamuni Paya
The Mahamuni Paya may be found in the city of Mawlamyine, closer to the city’s northern boundary. This is the largest of all the temple complexes in the city, and it was designed in the conventional architectural style of the Mon people. Bricks are used to cover the pavements, which serve to link the several shrines that are situated inside the temple complex.
Kyaikthanlan Paya
This stupa, which dates back to the late 9th century and is the highest in Mawlamyine, can be found to the south of Mahamuni Paya. It was constructed at the time when Mutpi Raja ruled the area and was king. Over the course of many centuries and under the rule of a variety of monarchs, the pagoda gradually became taller. The pagoda stands at a height of around 50 metres. In addition to this, there are 34 smaller pagodas located all around the main pagoda.
Seindon Mibaya Kyaung Monastery
This monastery was established in the late 19th century and may be found just below the Kyaikthanlan site. It is the location where Seindon, the queen of King Mindon Min, sought refuge after King Thibaw Min was crowned king. King Mindon Min was her husband.
Aung Theikdi Zedi
South of the Seindon Mibaya Kyaung may be found the area known as the Aung Theikdi Zedi. The leafs of silver and gold have been used to decorate this zedi located in seclusion. An observation point may be found on the western slope of the ridge to the south of the Zedi. Fantastic views of the sunset may be had from this vantage point. It is also the ideal location for enjoying the evening sea breezes.
Gaungse Kyun Island
Gaungse Kyun is a beautiful island that can also be found off the shore of Mawlamyine’s northwest coast. It is also known as the Shampoo Island. During the time of the Ava, the island was given its distinctive name. It was at this period that water drawn from a spring located on this island was used for the ceremonial washing of the royal hair. The island is home to a number of magnificent buildings, some of which are the Sandawshin Paya, the Silver Zedi, and a Buddhist meditation centre.
