Haghartsin Monastery
Haghartsin Monastery, a few kilometres from Dilijan, was built in the 12th century. This lovely monastery is hidden behind some big nut trees in a forested canyon. It was constructed by two Bagratuni Kingdom princes. The monastery contains three churches dedicated to Gregory the Illuminator, the Virgin Mary, and St Stepanos. It was an important cultural centre during its times. In the monastery’s churches, there are several outstanding khatchkars and pictures.
Goshavank Monastery
The magnificent Goshavank Monastery, also known as Nor Getik, is located in the Gosh village, some 14.3 miles (23 km) from Dilijan. The monastery, which was built in the late 12th century, contains some of the best stone sculptures, displaying the abilities of mediaeval artisans. Mkhitar Gosh established the monastery and was subsequently buried in a chapel adjoining the main structure. Surp Astvatsatin, a few smaller churches, and a library with a tower are the primary structures here. The monastery was formerly the country’s most important cultural centre.
