Gonio Fortress
South of Batumi and next to the picturesque Chorokhi River is where you’ll find Gonio Fortress. This historic Roman and Byzantine stronghold spans a huge area and has a number of towers that are rather spectacular. Within the walls of the stronghold lies a picture-perfect garden. Within the walls of the stronghold is where the Apostle Matthew Leiv was laid to rest. The settlement of Sapri is located around three kilometres from the Gonio fortification and has a pebble coastline. From this vantage point, you will get a breathtaking perspective of Turkey.
