The construction of Joo Chiat Road took place in the 20th century. During that historical period, Chew Joo Chiat was the person who owned this piece of property. During that time, people referred to him as “The King of Katong,” and he farmed coconuts on this territory. Not long after that, the government devised a strategy to expand the existing infrastructure in order to develop the region. In the property that belonged to Chew Joo Chiat, the government intended to build a road that was perfectly straight. On Chew Joo Chiat’s property, the government was granted permission to construct a road. After him, the street was given the name Joo Chiat Road.
