Lumbini Sacred Garden

The Buddhist community across the globe holds the city of Lumbini in the highest regard as a holy location. It is widely held that the birthplace of Gautam Buddha was at Lumbini, in the area known as the Sacred Gardens. Around the third century B.C., King Ashoka paid a visit to this location and established a monastery there. The splendour of this location was forgotten for many decades and buried deep inside the annals of history until it was unearthed in the year 1896. Temples, statues, monasteries, and a great deal more are just some of the historic buildings that may be seen in this location.

Mayadevi Temple

It is thought that the Mayadevi Temple is the oldest edifice in Nepal, going back to at least 300 BC and maybe much farther. It may be found in the Sacred Garden that Lumbini has to offer. Bricks were used in the construction of the temple. The foundation that can be seen on the lowest level of this temple gives the impression that it was constructed before to the third century BC, with further extensions being made during the reigns of the Maurya and Gupta Kingdoms. The Buddha’s mother, Maya Devi, inspired the naming of this shrine.

Ashokan Pillar

Lumbini’s Ashokan Pillar may be seen to the west of Mayadevi Temple. On it is an inscription that describes the visit that King Ashoka made to this location in 249 BC. The year of the visit is given. When lightning struck the pillar in the seventh century, it fractured in half, creating two separate columns. In spite of this, the two parts were eventually brought together by metal bands. It is claimed that the Buddha’s mother took a relaxing dip in the water just before she gave birth to their son there. The pool may be found in close proximity to the pillar. Numerous foundations can be seen everywhere around the site, and their ages range from the 2nd century BC to the 9th century AD. In subsequent eras, each of these foundations was meticulously repaired.

Dharma Swami Maharaja Buddha Vihar

This Tibetan Monastery may be found in Lumbini, and it has a significant number of Buddha statues that have been gilded. Lama Chogye Trichen Rinpoche was the one who first established the monastery. The monks who reside at Chogye Trichen’s Monastery in Boudha go all the way to this location so that they may spend the winter months here. During that time, you will be able to hear them reciting sacred mantras first thing in the morning.

Kapilvastu Excursion

This location is roughly 24 kilometres to the west of Lumbini. At the moment, people refer to it by the name Tilaurakot. It is thought that the remains at this location are the remnants of constructions that date back to the ancient Shakya kingdom. It is widely held belief that the young Gautam Buddha spent his boyhood years at this location. You will be able to see here a variety of constructions, including fort walls, gates, stupa foundations, and more. There is a little museum in the neighbourhood where you can see around three thousand coins that were discovered here during archaeological investigations.
