Shymkent, Kazakhstan

Shymkent, often spelled Chimkent, is a multiethnic, mineral-rich city in Kazakhstan’s south. In addition to being a major industrial city in Kazakhstan, it is also a significant cultural centre. The city is densely populated, with a considerable proportion of Kazakhstan’s population living in the broader metropolitan region. Shymkent’s economy is heavily reliant on the refined zinc and lead mining sectors. Chemical, textile, food processing, and pharmaceutical sectors are all key parts of Shymkent’s economy.

Shymkent’s history stretches back to the 12th century, when it was founded to protect Sayram, a Silk Road town. It also functioned as a major crossroads for commerce between the nomadic and urban populations of Shymkent and its environs. Various forces, including Chinggis Khaan’s raids and nomadic attacks, wreaked havoc on the city on multiple occasions. Before being seized by Russians in 1864, the city stood tall as the Konkand stronghold.

Regional Studies & History Museum

In Shymkent, the Regional Studies and History Museum is a significant monument. The museum houses a diverse variety of exhibits illustrating Central Asian history and culture. Shymkent, Turkistan, Sayram, and Otrar are among the places along the Great Silk Route where the displays provide insight into ancient life. The museum’s memorial of victims of political persecution is another attraction.

The Bazaar

The Bazaar, also known as the Central Market, is the city’s principal hub of trade and business. It is located in the middle of Shymkent. This lively market trades a wide range of goods. Fresh spices, inexpensive clothing, dressing robes, and traditional shawls are among the items available. Colorful wooden chests that are beautifully painted with tin are another unusual product that can be bought on the market.

Fantasy World Amusement Park

The Fantasy World Amusement Park, located on Republic Avenue in Shymkent, is a popular family destination. The dance hall is a popular feature at this amusement park. There are also a selection of rides available for both children and adults to enjoy. The park’s sideshows also provide live entertainment performances. In the park, there are several cafes providing east-European and local food.

Kydyra Minaret

The Kydyra Minaret, located in Sayram near Shymkent, is a magnificent architectural masterpiece. The 10th century saw the construction of this limestone building. The minaret is roughly 15 metres tall and can be viewed from most places of Shymkent. A observation platform with arched balconies pointing in all four directions can be found on the uppermost tier of the minaret, from where one may receive a bird’s eye view of Sayram.

Karashash-Ana Mausoleum

The Karashash-Ana Mausoleum in Sayram is one of Kazakhstan’s most renowned mausoleums. This historical monument was created atop the tomb of Karashash-Ana, mother of the famed saint Akhmed Yasaui, in the 17th century. She was well-known for her extensive knowledge and was regarded as one of the most capable ladies of her day. This massive edifice is an excellent example of Central Asian architecture.

Friday Mosque

The Friday Mosque in Sayram is a well-known landmark in the city. The mosque, which is located on the eastern side of Shymkent, was totally funded by donations from benefactors from throughout the world. The mosque is notable for its unusual combination of modern and traditional design. Visitors to this mosque, which took roughly ten years to finish, are greeted with an attractive front façade. The main hall of the mosque has an excellent interior design.

Aksu-Dzhabagly Nature Reserve

The Aksu-Dzhabagly Nature Reserve near Shymkent was Central Asia’s first nature reserve. Here you will find a diverse range of vegetation and wildlife, including over 1,400 distinct flower species. There are around 40 mammalian species and over 230 avian species can be found here. The paradise flycatcher, Central Asian lynx, snow leopard, black stork, and Egyptian vulture are among the unusual species found in this reserve.
